These glasses are a staple, and every household should have at least two.

You can occasionally find them at supermarket merch displays, they tend to pop up as seasonal gifts every year. If you’re having trouble tracking some down, you can purchase them from the New Belgian website.

UPDATE: Click here to purchase a pair of Globe Glasses from New Belgium, and choose one of four charities for them to donate to! One dollar from every glassware 2-pack ($8.99) will be donated to the non-profit organization of your choice. For more information, read the press release.

The model seen here is the Libbey 4803, and is also known as the 20 ounce tulip pub glass. You can find it from a number of online wholesalers. For individual purchases, check with a local restaurant supply company to see if they will break a case for you.

You hardly ever see these glasses out at bars anymore. And for good reason: the Delirium Tremens glass is consistently the #1 most stolen beer glass in America (and probably Belgium and the UK).

Something about those pink elephants must give people sticky fingers.

They worked their hands to the bone like every day. And the pay sucked too. They really needed a vacation. Back in olden times, they didn’t get two weeks off every year, so they had to take matters into their own hands.

The main logger guy tracked down the Devil and said, “Hey Devil, we really need a break so we can go visit our women. How about a little help, ya know? Flying boat, maybe?” (they didn’t have planes back then). The Devil said, “Yeah, that’s no problem. I’m the Devil, your wish is my command! But one thing, you gotta give me your souls.”

The main logger was a pretty skillful negotiator, so he was like “OK, but lets make a wager first. If we can fly your cursed air canoe all the way to see our honeys without hitting any steeples or saying Goddamn, then you’ve got to do all our wood chopping for a week. If not, then you can have our souls.”

Well, you can see where this story is going. The Devil won the bet, and he condemned all the Quebecois loggers to canoe around the skies for eternity. To commemorate this event, Unibroue crafted a delicious strong red ale, and this is the glass that goes with it.

Let me say this, these Stone Brewing glasses are some of the nicest I have ever seen, and the thin walls are fantastic.

Yes, thinner glass means it’s easier to break, but with a beer glass this awesome, you will be sure to take great care of it. Forget about washing it right after you use it, just fill it with water and leave it next to your sink to take care of it in the morning. In your post-IRS inebriation, your grip might be a little stronger than normal, and you don’t want to be picking glass shards out of your sink.

These are not your everyday beer glasses, but hey, Stone’s Imperial Russian Stout isn’t your everyday kind of beer.

NOTE: It appears that this glass is no longer available! Check the Stone Company Store for the latest design.

Crafting the Perfect Beer Glass

Lots of people are hot on this new beer glass from Samuel Adams. It’s a really well designed glass, and it’s as if the designers took two different glassware styles, the Pint glass and the Tulip glass, and crossbred them. The result is the best of both worlds; the vessel is both a tulip without a stem and a pint glass with sexy curves. Yes, it’s just a beer glass, it’s not going to change the world, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t make the afternoon beer a tad more enjoyable.

Focus on Design and Usability

“We wanted to create a glass that offers beer lovers a full sensory drinking experience by fully showcasing Samuel Adams Boston Lager’s complex balance of malt and hop flavors. This glass achieves that mission.” -Jim Koch

Tiax, the world-renowned sensory experts, worked closely with Jim to identify and evaluate the functional design features needed in a glass to showcase the key attributes of Samuel Adams Boston Lager®. The key requirements for the perfect glass for Samuel Adams Boston Lager included: delivering sweetness from the malt; maximizing the hops aroma and flavor; maintaining the ideal temperature; supporting a rich and creamy head; and sustaining the right amount of carbonation.

Key features include:

Beaded rim to release flavor and aroma as the beer enters your mouth.

Laser etched to release constant stream of bubbles.

Outward turned lip delivers beer to the front of the tongue where malty sweetness can be fully enjoyed.

What does this mean for you? Well, similar to the Duvel glass, the tulip-style lip of the glass keeps head in check, moving it back into the glass while you take a sip instead of making you slurp your beer through foam. It also has laser-etched nucleation points on the bottom of the glass to allow a steady stream of carbonation.

The downside of these glasses is they are tough to stack, so they end up taking up more space. Otherwise, this is a great hybrid glass that brings you the best of both worlds when it comes to tulip glasses and the pint glasses.

Where to Buy

The glasses are available for purchase in packs of 4 on the brewery’s website. There are a few places online that sell them as well. They frequently pop up on Ebay or Craigslist, and generally seem to range from 5 to 8 dollars apiece.

The Duvel Glass is the gold standard to which all other glasses are held. It’s sleek, sexy, and best of all, functional. The large base allows for plenty of headspace, pulling the foam back into the glass while you sip the delicious Belgian ale underneath. No glassware collection is complete without a pair of Duvel glasses.

Here at Beer Geek Shop we are intent on curating a wide array of beer glasses to share with the Internet. From the pub to your house, we’re accumulating a selection of Pint glasses, Pilsners, Tulips, Goblets, Snifters, Steins, Weizens, Boots, and Mugs.

This article is a meant as a basic guide to the different styles of beer glasses available.

Let’s take a look around, shall we?

Probably the most popular beer glasses are Pint Glasses

They come in two sizes; American (16 ounces) or British/Imperial (20 ounces). These can be flat-walled or curved. For home use we prefer the Nonic glass or the Imperial Pint Glass, but for commercial use, most bars prefer thick walled mixer glasses because they are harder to break.

Recommended for: Pale Ales, Stouts, IPAs, ESBs

Next up are Tulip Glasses

These guys usually have stems, and are bulbous at the base, opening up and flaring out at the top. These beer glasses help focus the aromas and minimize the amount of head you have to slurp through before you get to the beer. The Duvel glass is a perfect example of this style of glass.

Recommended for: Belgians, Blonde Ales, Saisons, Sours

Pilsner glasses are generally tall and slender

This is to accentuate the clarity and carbonation of the beer. They can be hourglass shaped or conical. Sometimes, a pilsner glass can double for a lambic or gueuze glass, like our Framboise Pilsner glass.

Recommeded for: German Lagers, Steam Beer, Wits, Pilsners (duh)

Tasting glasses are good for sharing

Any beer afficionado knows to always keep a few beer tasting glasses on hand. Sooner or later, you’re going to have guests over who want to know what strange beer you’re drinking. Will you tell them, “this beer is really special and I doubt your inferior palate will be able to appreciate it”? Of course not. But you’re also not going to waste more than two or three ounces on them before judging their reaction. Nothing’s worse than seeing an untouched pint glass full of your favorite beer go to waste.

Recommended for: Not wasting your beloved beer on those who might not like it.

Glassware Accesories

For the beer evangelists out there who enjoy converting friends to craft beer and holding their own beer tastings, wooden beer tasting paddles work well with 5 oz taster glasses. Pro tip: put the glasses on the paddle before you start pouring, it makes it much easier to keep your flights organized! If you’re handy with a drill and a saw, you can make your own tasting paddles, but we think these manufactured paddles are worth more than the effort.

Recommended for: Holding your own beer tastings
