The Sam Adams Glass

Crafting the Perfect Beer Glass

Lots of people are hot on this new beer glass from Samuel Adams.  It’s a really well designed glass, and it’s as if the designers took two different glassware styles, the Pint glass and the Tulip glass, and crossbred them.  The result is the best of both worlds; the vessel is both a tulip without a stem and a pint glass with sexy curves.  Yes, it’s just a beer glass, it’s not going to change the world, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t make the afternoon beer a tad more enjoyable.

Focus on Design and Usability

“We wanted to create a glass that offers beer lovers a full sensory drinking experience by fully showcasing Samuel Adams Boston Lager’s complex balance of malt and hop flavors. This glass achieves that mission.” -Jim Koch

Tiax, the world-renowned sensory experts, worked closely with Jim to identify and evaluate the functional design features needed in a glass to showcase the key attributes of Samuel Adams Boston Lager®. The key requirements for the perfect glass for Samuel Adams Boston Lager included: delivering sweetness from the malt; maximizing the hops aroma and flavor; maintaining the ideal temperature; supporting a rich and creamy head; and sustaining the right amount of carbonation.

Key features include:

  • Beaded rim to release flavor and aroma as the beer enters your mouth.
  • Laser etched to release constant stream of bubbles.
  • Outward turned lip delivers beer to the front of the tongue where malty sweetness can be fully enjoyed.
What does this mean for you?  Well, similar to the Duvel glass, the tulip-style lip of the glass keeps head in check, moving it back into the glass while you take a sip instead of making you slurp your beer through foam.  It also has laser-etched nucleation points on the bottom of the glass to allow a steady stream of carbonation.
The downside of these glasses is they are tough to stack, so they end up taking up more space.  Otherwise, this is a great hybrid glass that brings you the best of both worlds when it comes to  tulip glasses and the pint glasses.

Where to Buy

The glasses are available for purchase in packs of 4 on the brewery’s website.  There are a few places online that sell them as well.  They frequently pop up on Ebay or Craigslist, and generally seem to range from 5 to 8 dollars apiece.
